The current financial year has witnessed a steep increase in number of penalty and prosecution cases as a follow-up measure of demonetisation of high denomination currency notes and to increase the tax base with a view to make the economy tax compliant. In the process, genuine tax payers are also likely to suffer some unpleasant action from tax officers.

Several amendments have been made in the Income-tax Act like insertion of sections 269ST, 271AAC, 271DA, amendment of section 115BBE etc.

Even there has been a significant change in the penalty provisions by introduction of Section 270A and A.Y. 2017-18 is the first year wherein the new section would be applied.

With a view to understand various intricate issues arising out of these recent developments, the Direct Taxes Committee of The Chamber of Tax Consultants is organising a Half Day Seminar on Penalty & Prosecution. The seminar will focus on the intricate legal issues and the practical approach to tackle penalty and prosecution proceedings.
